Super excited to be bringing Adam Stafford back through to the Tolbooth, kicking off the first SB show of the new season after the summer break.
The Falkirk musician is a peerless creative juggernaut, blending a capela experimentalism with an unusual sway for melodic, hook-laden pop choruses, always unique and always catching you off guard. Stafford is known for his intense live performances which incorporate soul-pop, post-punk and with layering of vocal loops, textural soundscapes to dizzying effect.
Usually performing solo, this show will be a rare opportunity to catch Adam with a bassist/keyboardist player in tow as he tours promoting 2018’s ‘Fire Behind The Curtain’ – a critically acclaimed double album of Neo-Classical compositions and avant-garde instrumentals, released via influential indie label Song, by Toad. Written over an 8-year period and inspired by Adam’s love of Meredith Monk, Michael Gordon and US Minimalism, the album is a testament of hope in his battle against depression.
In his own words the album is comprised of “choirs yelp and screech, beatboxing courses through cosmic k-holes and guitars sound like saxophones trapped deep in the wasp-machine.”

“A songwriter of real depth, rich in understanding, in melodic virtuosity, his work has gradually built up into an imposing, heroic catalogue.” – Clash Magazine
“Adam Stafford is one hell of a force and quite possibly one of the best live artists of our times.” – God is in The TV
“Probably the closest Stafford has come to the US minimalism of Steve Reich. That songs can stimulate the head one minute and break the heart the next would be a triumph for any musician. Yet again, Adam Stafford has created one of the best albums of the year (`Taser Revelations’).” – The National
