Stirling Orchestra’s first concert of the 2017/18 season is an eclectic mix of late Romantic, early 20th-Century music featuring Finlandia by Jean Sibelius – the composer’s tone poem railing against his country’s subjugation by Russia; Symphony No 1 by Gustav Mahler – a hugely impressive piece of music, and Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor – one of the world’s two most performed works for the instrument (the other is by Dvorak).
