Phil Differ – Premiere Performance
In August 1968, Philip Differ walked through the gates of St. Modan’s High School for the first time armed with a briefcase, a pen and the unshakeable belief that he was destined to usurp the school’s most famous ex-pupil, Leeds United and Scotland captain Billy Bremner.
Like most children of that era, Differ was football daft. Life revolved around playing, watching, reading about the game. There was nothing he couldn’t do with a ball, no fact or statistic he wasn’t aware of, no footballer’s image he couldn’t recognise.
If a boy from the Raploch could make it to the top so could a boy from Kilsyth. After all, what did Bremner have that Differ didn’t? In the course of the evening we will find out.
In this one man show, comedy writer Phil Differ examines the life and career of Billy Bremner, arguably the most under-rated and under-valued Scotland player of all time, explores the reasons (and excuses) for his own footballing failures and contemplates the conclusion that maybe, just maybe, Bremner was a better player than Differ after all.
